Fishing Boat to Lobster Boat update
This was my first plank on frame model boat that came purely from my own imagination. I drew up a set of plans, lofted a set of frames from those plans and headed for the workshop. The keel is red oak, the frames are 1/4" plywood and the planking is white pine in planks about 1/2" wide and just under 1/8" thick. I faired the hull smooth and laid on a fiberglass skin. The deck is 1/4" plywood sheathed in styrene plastic sheeting from the hobby shop. The "fishing boat" cabin is more plastic sheets from the hobby shop. The running lights, cabin light worked. The radar turned, it was the gear box from a toy car driven by one cell.
This all took place about 30 years ago, this past winter 2007-8 I decided to do a make over of this model to make it what I originally wanted it to be, a NewEngland Lobster Boat. I got carried away and planked the cabin roof with Mahogany that I had in the shop. It looks nice. The cabin shape is just the way I wanted it to be. I put a new motor in and mounted it plainly, used a new universal joint. I polished up the rudder and kort nozzil ( she is quite stearable in reverse) not normal gear, hey it is my boat.
The speed controll (Novak)and radio gear (Airtronics)are straight out of the 1970s. The motor is a Graupner 700 BB 9.6V, I am running it with two 6 cell car packs in parrallel. There is a noticable speed increase with the second battery, more available amperage.
